CELTA

What is a CELTA course?

If you're interested in teaching English as a foreign language, a CELTA course could be a great option for you. This course is also widely recognised around the world and is certified by Cambridge. Research conducted by Cambridge Assessment suggests that three out of four English language teaching jobs advertised require a CELTA certification. The CELTA course focuses on practical techniques and includes teaching practice with real groups of students in real classroom situations, either online or face-to-face. Whether you're looking for your first teaching job or are already teaching and want to gain a more widely recognised qualification, this CELTA course is the perfect choice for you.

Components of the CELTA course

To successfully complete the CELTA course, you will need to complete several essential components. These components include:

  • A minimum of 120 hours, focusing on teaching practice, observation of peers' teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers, guided lesson planning and feedback, individual tutorials, and input on teaching theory and methodology.
  • A minimum of 80 hours of coursework, which can be done in your own time, focusing on lesson planning, assignment preparation, and writing.
  • Six hours of observed teaching practice.
  • Six hours of observation of experienced teachers teaching.
  • Four written assignments of 750-1000 words.
  • A portfolio recording all your course assessments.

If you're interested in becoming an English teacher and want to take a CELTA course from the comfort of your home, you may want to consider an online option. The online CELTA course is just as valid as our face-to-face course and provides the same certification. It’s a great choice if you're comfortable with online learning or if you want to teach English online. Our online CELTA courses are available full-time over four weeks, Monday to Friday, or part-time over 14 weeks with weekly Zoom meetings.

Please note that you must pay the fees before the course begins, but we do also offer an early bird price if you want to pay in full 21 days before the course start date. Unfortunately, our Birmingham centre is not involved in any funding schemes, such as the Advanced Learner Loan.

Eligibility Criteria for a CELTA course

  • You must have fluent and accurate written and spoken English skills at a high C1 or C2 level, which is equivalent to a 7.5 in IELTS or an A or B in Cambridge CAE.
  • You should have a standard of education that is equivalent to the requirements for entry into higher education.
  • You must have the potential to complete assignments and teaching practice to a satisfactory level.
  • You should be able to discuss language with appropriate prompting and support.
  • If you are taking an online course, you must be able to use the online platform with minimal instruction and have appropriate technical equipment.

How to apply for a CELTA course?

To apply for our CELTA course, please fill out this application form with your personal information and answer some questions about teaching and language. You are welcome to research your answers online or in a grammar book or dictionary.

After you submit your application, we will email you within two working days to arrange a short interview on Zoom. There is no need to prepare anything in advance, but it's important for us to only accept applicants who we believe can be successful on the course. During the interview, we will also ask you to complete a short-timed writing task.

Following your interview, we will contact you with the outcome. If you have been accepted onto the CELTA course, we will provide you with payment details to confirm your place.

After your CELTA

Completing a CELTA course can open doors to teaching and travel opportunities. CELTA graduates can teach English in various parts of the world, such as Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe. Towards the end of your course, we will conduct a careers session to guide you on how to find teaching jobs in the field of English language teaching, both in the UK and abroad. During and after the course, we will put you in touch with the English Path recruitment team, who will inform you about teaching jobs in our schools located in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, London, Malta, Dubai, Toronto, and Dublin. In fact, during peak recruitment periods, some CELTA candidates may even receive job offers before the course ends!
