What is CELTA?

The CELTA course is the most widely recognised course in the world for training teachers of English as a foreign language. CELTA courses are certified by Cambridge. Research by Cambridge Assessment shows that three out of four English language teaching jobs advertised require a CELTA.

The CELTA course focuses on developing practical techniques, and every course includes teaching practice with real groups of students in real classroom situations, whether online or face-to-face.

CELTA is suitable both for those who are looking for their first teaching job or for those who are already teaching and are looking for a more widely recognised qualification.

These are the key components of the course:

A minimum of 120 hours, made up of teaching practice, observation of peers’ teaching practice, observation of experienced teachers, guided lesson planning and feedback, individual tutorials, and input on teaching theory and methodology.
A minimum of 80 hours of coursework, undertaken in your own time, focusing on lesson planning and assignment preparation and writing
6 hours of observed teaching practice
6 hours of observation of experienced teachers teaching
4 written assignments of 750-1000 words
A portfolio recording all course assessments

Online CELTA courses

Online CELTA courses are equivalent to face-to-face CELTA courses and offer exactly the same certification as them. Online courses are suitable for those who wish to teach online, or for those who are unable to come in to study in Birmingham, but who are comfortable working online. They are the ideal preparation for a career in teaching English online, a growing part of our profession. We offer online full-time courses, over four weeks, Monday to Friday and part-time over 14 weeks, with meetings on Zoom once a week.

*The early bird price applies to candidates who pay in full 21 days before the course begins.

Fees can be paid in instalments, but all fees must be paid in full before the course begins. Our centre is not a participant in any funding schemes, such as the Advanced Learner Loan.

Candidates will be selected using the following criteria:

Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
Candidates must be fluent in accurate written and spoken English (high C1 or C2 level – this is equivalent to a 7.5 in IELTS or an A or B in Cambridge CAE).
All candidates should have a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education.
The potential to complete assignments and teaching practice to a satisfactory level.
The ability to discuss language, with appropriate prompting/support
(For online courses): the ability to use the online platform with minimal instruction and have appropriate technical equipment

How to apply:

  1. Please complete this application form with your personal information and some questions about teaching and language. It's absolutely fine to research your answers online or in a grammar book or dictionary.
  2. We will email you within 2 working days and invite you to a short interview on Zoom. You won't need to prepare anything for your interview. It's relatively informal, but it's important we only accept applicants who we believe can be successful on their course. As part of your interview, we'll also do a short timed writing task.
  3. Then we'll send you the result of your interview. At this stage, if you've been successful in your application for a CELTA course, we'll send you payment details so you can confirm your place on the course.

After your CELTA

A CELTA is a passport to travel. CELTA graduates go on to teach English in all parts of the world, including Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe.

At the end of your course, we’ll have a careers session, during which we’ll give you guidance on how to find work in the world of English language teaching, both in the UK and abroad.

During and after your course, we’ll put you in touch with the English Path recruitment team who will fill you in on job opportunities at our schools in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, London, Malta, Dubai, Toronto and Dublin. At peak recruitment periods, some CELTA candidates may even be interviewed and receive job offers before their course has ended!

The English Path Guarantee
Your progress is very important to us and we’re confident of your success. On your first day we will work together to establish achievable goals for you during your stay with us.
