Leeds - Capital of Culture 2023

The city that appointed itself capital of culture

In 2023, Leeds city has become the self-proclaimed city of culture. This is no surprise to locals as it is one of the largest cities in the UK. Diversity is at the heart of Leeds. With one of the biggest student communities, and an ever-growing exchange student community. Leeds was in the top cities in the competition for the European capital of culture of 2023. However, it was ultimately disqualified after Britain exited the European Union. This did not stop the city from announcing its own year-long celebration of culture.

Leeds is a truly multicultural city with more than 14,400 international students from over 137 countries. Not only does the student community prevail, the non-British community, predominantly Pakistani, Portuguese, Ukrainian, come together to reap the rewards of the big city. Leeds has a diverse community of people, fashion, languages and more.

Leeds is a vibrant city, full of life and rich in history and culture. It is home to many historical sites such as Royal Armouries Museum, Temple Newsam, Harewoord House. But also, many big parks to explore the British green scenery, ready to be explored.

This year, Leeds is showcasing all its different talents with free and paid events all around the city. Giving the opportunity for all art created by people in the town. From a dynamic, cross-artform performance of music, dance and storytelling written and performed by the generation that brought you punk to magic shows and art showcases.

The city will also be holding events to show the architecture of Leeds and delving into live poetry at the Leeds Poetry Festival from the best writers in the UK, along with the funniest comedies. Leeds central library will also be holding free family-friendly events such as book readings. And of course, the famous Leeds Festival, where famous artists from all over the world come for the four days of camping and live performances of all time favourite bands such as Imagine Dragons, The Killers, Loyle Carner and many more.

Leeds Year of Culture will be a wonderful opportunity to get to know the roots of the city and those that planted it. We all benefit from experiencing culture, and Leeds has plenty to show you.
