Frequently asked questions about EP Berlin

Visa & pre-arrival

If you want to study in Germany for less than 90 days, it depends on your nationality whether you need a (“Schengen”) visa or not. For a longer stay you will need a visa or residence permit. Please check here to see if you need a visa.

For a language course longer than 90 days, there are different visa options:

  1. You can apply for a Visa for Language Acquisition in your country of residence if you are planning to learn German with us. This visa can be obtained for up to one year and you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week.
  2. If you are planning to study at a university in Germany (in German or in English), you can apply for a student visa that would include a language course before studying. Students are allowed to work up to 140 full- or 280 half days per year.
  3. The same applies if you have an offer for an apprenticeship (“Ausbildung”) in Germany.

A German student visa is for students who have conditional acceptance to a university and need to complete a language course (like German or English) before full admission. This visa can be issued for up to two years and can be extended in Germany. A major benefit is that it allows you to work up to 140 full or 280 half days per year.

A blocked bank account is a special type of account required for many non-EU/EEA students to prove they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses in Germany. As of the current rules, you must transfer a specific amount (currently € 992 per month of stay in Germany) into this account. This will be paid back to your bank account on a monthly basis after arriving in Germany. There are plenty of blocked bank account providers. Students have made good experiences with Fintiba, Expatrio and Coracle.

You are required to have health insurance to study in Germany. For your visa application, you will need to show proof of travel insurance. Once you are in Germany and enrolled, you will need to sign up for public or private health insurance that meets German standards. We can provide further advice on this after your arrival.

Yes, non europeans students can apply for the Language Acquisition Visa, which allows them to work 20 hours per week.

Citizens from Andorra, Australia, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States can enter Germany as touristsand apply for their visa in the country.

The Semi-intensive German course per at least 3 months, and maximum of 1 year.

The English Path social programme also organises regular activities, giving students the chance to practise their language skills with classmates and explore the city.

For longer stays, many students choose the Deutschland Ticket (€58 per month), which allows unlimited travel on public transport and regional trains across Germany.

Working and living in the city

While rent prices have gone up in recent years, Berlin is still one of the cheapest Western European capitals.

The German government estimates € 992. However, you are probably going to spend a bit more than that.

Yes, if you are in Berlin on a student visa or a language acquisition visa, you are allowed to take a part time job.

Berlin is a very international city, and many of the startup companies based here employ people with no knowledge of German. However, if you are planning to build a career in Germany, you should learn the language.

Berlin is quite a safe city. Of course, like in every bigger city, you need to look after yourself and your belongings
