Frequently asked questions about EP Berlin

Visa & pre-arrival

If you want to study in Germany for less than 90 days, it depends on your nationality whether you need a (β€œSchengen”) visa or not. For a longer stay you will need a visa or residence permit. PleaseΒ check here to see if you need a visa.

For a language course longer than 90 days, there are different visa options:

  1. You can apply for a Visa for Language Acquisition in your country of residence if you are planning to learn German with us. This visa can be obtained for up to one year and you are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week.
  2. If you are planning to study at a university in Germany (in German or in English), you can apply for a student visa that would include a language course before studying. Students are allowed to work up to 140 full- or 280 half days per year.
  3. The same applies if you have an offer for an apprenticeship (β€œAusbildung”) in Germany.

A German student visa is for students who have conditional acceptance to a university and need to complete a language course (like German or English) before full admission. This visa can be issued for up to two years and can be extended in Germany. A major benefit is that it allows you to work up to 140 full or 280 half days per year.

A blocked bank account is a special type of account required for many non-EU/EEA students to prove they have sufficient funds to cover their living expenses in Germany. As of the current rules, you must transfer a specific amount (currently € 992 per month of stay in Germany) into this account. This will be paid back to your bank account on a monthly basis after arriving in Germany. There are plenty of blocked bank account providers. Students have made good experiences with Fintiba, Expatrio and Coracle.

You are required to have health insurance to study in Germany. For your visa application, you will need to show proof of travel insurance. Once you are in Germany and enrolled, you will need to sign up for public or private health insurance that meets German standards. We can provide further advice on this after your arrival.

Yes, non europeans students can apply for the Language Acquisition Visa, which allows them to work 20 hours per week.Β

Citizens from Andorra, Australia, Brazil, Canada, El Salvador, Honduras, Monaco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States can enter Germany as touristsand apply for their visa in the country.

The Semi-intensive German course per at least 3 months, and maximum of 1 year.

Bring waterproof clothing if you’re arriving in the autumn or winter.Β

Courses and progress

In addition to your English classes at EP, there are plenty of opportunities to practice your English in Berlin: meetups for your area of interest, speaking cafes, guided tours and many more. The best option are of course our very own social activities!

Berlin offers plenty of opportunities to improve your German outside the EP classroom. Our social programme will give you opportunities to speak German, and you can find many more depending on your interests: meetups, clubs, cinemas, museums and so on!

Berlin is an exciting, vibrant international city. Everyone should be able to find ways to enjoy themselves here: night clubs, parties, cafes, bars, parks, museums, history, culture - take your pick!

Our lessons are very effective. You will need to seek out English-speakers in Paris. There are various clubs and associations where English-speakers meet up and socialise. You can also practice English with English Path staff and other students.

It's easy to immerse yourself in the local language. If you know a language which is similar to French very well such as Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian or English you can progress very quickly.
